Making ornate earrings for everyday wear

I used to make both simple yet clever and complex ornate earrings in the past for the Earrings Everyday challenge reveal. But after the challenges stopped, I had no motivation to make earrings. Even after selling the bigger and more complex pieces, I was left with a rather sizeable bunch for my personal use. Later, I shifted to making simpler earrings for the sets I sold, which grinded to a halt when I stopped making jewellery for sale. Making ornate earrings for everyday wear seemed like a waste, unless I had an outfit or occasion that demanded it.

However, in the last seven months I have been making several earrings. They seem to be easy projects to delve into and finish quickly. You can see the recent golden earrings made for a photoshoot and fabric kundan earrings. I have also posted two earring making tutorials such as the red rhinestone earrings, and ribbon rose earrings tutorial. I have also gifted some without taking pictures or blogging about them. So here is an attempt to catalogue two of them.

I made both earrings seen in this post for myself. While I wouldn’t call them everyday wear, I have worn them several times in the last few months. They are easy to wear all day long.

Ornate Filigree earrings

I used a pair of golden filigree bases and connected sew on rhinestones with settings to them using wire. I added artisan wire earhooks and Czech bead dangles to complete them. While both the blues (rhinestone and bead) look the same in the photograph, the stone is a deep dark blue and the bead is a Peacock Montana blue.

Ornate hand painted resin earrings

This pair was a redo. My mom had found these deep red studs last year and I decided to create a Renaissance style earrings with them. I created dangles with a red center using an antique bronze finish bezel and red coloured resin. The red was sticky, attracted dust and dried to an unattractive colour and finish. But I saved it thinking that I will work-it up somehow. It haunted me for several months.

Earlier this year, I bought some gold paint (Venezia Metallica by Granotomi). During the same time I was also experimenting with UV resin. I tested the paint on the above mentioned bezels on the red center and to my surprise, it looked really good. Therefore, I painted some flowers on it, coloured the sides and added UV center. I couldn’t believe how good it looked and how well it matched with the red studs. I have worn it several times since then and received a lot of compliments. I might do more such redos in the future.
