Festive beaded necklaces

Recently, I came across two people. The first woman, looked at a beaded necklace and said “wow, I need more beads” and the other said “I don’t want this jewellery because it has a beaded chain.” I wonder, what is it about beads that divides people so much. Why is that people either love or hate them? I for one has been a lover of beads ever since I started to make jewellery in 2008. So much so, that when one of my dates pointed out that he doesn’t hold my beaded jewellery in high regard, I said no for a second date

Why wear beaded necklaces

Beads excite me and sooth me they help me channelise my creativity into a wearable object. Whenever I feel like I wasted my time (particularly on weekends), I make a simple beaded necklace and I feel satisfied that I have somehow used my time diligently. Beaded necklaces are easy to wear. You don’t need an occasion or a celebration in order to wear them. On the other hand, beaded necklaces can make you feel festive, happy and dressed up when you wear them. Last week I gave an expert lecture for another department and I received a compliment saying that I look very pretty. it amused me for I had been wearing the same casual outfit since morning without any compliments. The difference was that I was wearing one of my statement beaded necklaces from Handpicked in the afternoon

With that I want to show you a couple of new festive beaded necklaces. You can find them on the shop page here is well.

Coin necklace with glass beads

Glass bead necklace with a vintage Afghani stone studded coin and two new coin charms. I bought the vintage coin from a collector and dealer at Beadfest in 2016. The other two are new, Indian 2 paisa coin look alike charms. To play up the contrast in the Afghani coin, I used gray and red beads throughout the necklace. This piece is available for sale.

Green Filigree

This is a necklace of glass beads and shell pearls looped together. I have used a laser cut brass bracelet focal as a pendant and used a rhinestone topper. The necklace comes with earrings. One of my friends booked it as soon as I posted on my Instagram.

Earthly Structures

The last of the three, is this simple glass bead necklace with earrings in browns and gold. I was creating this piece like a kid playing with an abacus – stacking shapes on a rod to get a structure. If it doesn’t sell I may remake it with a different – handmade pendant.

Since I have not been making on a regular basis, this is all for now. I predict that the coming month will be hectic with end semester work at college, evaluations and a work trip. However, I hope to keep blogging. Inspired by a trend presentation that one of my students made in class, I redid a part of this blog’s homepage. I am going for a neo-brutalist and a maximalist vibe here. I have ideas for the rest and hope to complete it soon.

Till then, tell me why do you think people dislike beads? Also, feedback are welcome on the blog.

I hope you find it interesting

Cheers

I think it’s a matter of taste. The taste you have been taught since young age by your mother or both parents. Most people never change their tastes. Even if they like something different, they are not brave enough to buy it, especially if it’s a statement piece, made of non-precious materials. In many cases, it’s mere snobbery 🙂

Maybe nurture has a role to play. I don’t think anyone in my family wore beads or were interested in them. In my case I learnt to appreciate them as they were colourful, easy to use and quick to make and sell.
