Working on the Diwali edit of my Banjaran Dreams collection, I decided to focus on luxurious pieces. Natural fibres, Handwoven fabrics and bling were first on my list. I also wanted the line to be more ethical and sustainable like the rest of the collection. Therefore, I turned to jute yarn which is used for packaging in order to reuse and upcycle them into these fabulous DIY Jute yarn diamond earrings. If you are in a hurry, scroll down for a tutorial of these earrings.
If not, I would like to tell you more about the two other- statement necklaces of jute that I made.
Black and red Jute necklace with cowrie
I was scrolling through my Instagram feed when this photograph of a woman dressed in a black and red traditional chaniya choli (skirt and blouse) caught my eye. Here blouse had mirror work with cowrie on them. Furthermore she wore silver jewellery. I wanted to create a piece inspired by that look and made this necklace in red and black.
This is a statement necklace with black glass beads and red ceramic beads ( bought in Rome). The silver beads and the cowrie are embellishments. The necklace has a drawstring closure. It comes with matching earrings as seen in the picture and is for sale. Click here to read more about Cowrie shells and using them in jewellery.
Chintamani necklace
This necklace is inspired by the Chintamani Or the thought stone that is revered in Buddhism. I have used two Kholapuri bails as connectors to create an interesting element in the pendant. It is strung together with glass rounds, ovals and Precoisa seed beads. It comes with matching earrings and is for sale. Fubnily, now, when I look at the necklace, it reminds me of a bumblebee. What do you think?
With that we will move on to the tutorial for making jute yarn jewellery, particularly jute yarn earrings.
DIY Jute yarn diamond earrings
Materials
- Jute yarn 15 inches
- Felt backing
- Rhinestone in settings with holes to sew – 2
- Stud backs – 1 pair
- Brown sewing thread and needle
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Modpodge fabric
Method
Cut two pieces of jute yarn of 7-8 inches length each. I used old fibrous jut yarn used for packaging as I wanted to recycle it. So my yarn is not of uniform thickness but about 3-4mm. You can use new combed jute yarn as well. The length can be more or less depending on how big you want your finished earrings to be.
Thread your needle with brown thread (close to your jute yarn colour) and knot. Pass it through one end of one piece of the yarn. Make a spiral using the jute yarn, stitching it up as you go. Fold the end of the yarn backwards and make the longer stitches on the back, if required. Once the spiral holds by itself, knot and cut the thread. Repeat to create a pair of jute yarn spirals.
Thread your needle once again (if you have run out of thread) and start sewing the rhinestone focal to one side of the spiral. Knot and cut the thread. I like to sew rather than glue as it offers more stability. Repeat this step to create a pair.
Measure the size of your spirals and cut two pieces of felt circles for backing. Keep the circle over the earring and mark where you want the stud to be. Poke a hole and insert the stud. Glue this piece of felt (with the stud) to the spiral using a glue gun. Repeat this step to create a pair. Trim any felt sticking outside and trim stray jute fibres. Add a coat of mod podge to settle the fibres down. Let it dry for atleast 20 minutes after which your jute yarn diamond earrings will be ready to wear and enjoy.
I hope that you enjoyed reading my DIY tutorial on making jute yarn diamond earrings. Well, they only have rhinestones in them, but calling them diamond earrings makes them sound more fancy and festive. What do you think?
I hope you found it interesting
