Golden Sunflower earrings

Hey guys, I am taking a break from showcasing my Patinam collection for the short reveal post of the Earrings Everyday challenge for September that is inspired by Sunflowers. If you haven’t checked out my Patinam collection that is inspired by Chennai city, then you should take a look at the Patinam Portfolio page and pick them up before they get sold out.

We’re All Ears Challenge : Sunflowers

Sunflowers are bright, bold and beautiful. Infact they are considered to be ‘perfectly beautiful’ for the arrangement of petals and pollen buds in each flower follow the golden proportion. The Spatial arrangement is spiral with each turn corresponding on a number on the Fibbonacci series in that pattern.

In this month’s inspiration post, Ms. Erin had listed some fun facts about sunflowers. One said that Sunflowers are native to the Americas. I did not know that but I do know that Sunflower oil is the most used refined cooking oil in India in the last 30 years or so. The closest that I have come to a sunflower is passing through Sunflower farms when I used to work in Bangalore. There used to be these private farms leading to Chandapura in the outskirts of Bangalore 9-10 years ago. Seeing little vineyards and sunflowers patches in an otherwise almost deserted area made made me feel very peaceful and rested to face my then hectic work schedule. I am not sure if those fields still exist but I do miss them.

Golden Sunflower earrings

I made two pairs of Golden Sunflower earrings for this challenge. The first one is a take on my Filigree Friendship bracelet which was made of Beadcaps. Forgive me for the shabby pics in this old tutorial. I flattened out some Golden beadcaps and made dangling earrings. I think they look very pretty and feminine. What do you think?

The second pair is more chunky and made up of mirror components that I found on a pair of earrings in a street shop. However, the store bought pair was too gaudy for me. It had pompoms, rings, chain, ghungroos, a plastic bead and these sunflowerish mirror components that I loved. I ripped them apart out and made 1 pair with pompoms and one with the mirrors. Here are the Sunflower earrings. Regrettably, one earring broke slightly at the back when I made it. I hope I can fix it.

“We’re all golden sunflowers inside.” Said Allen Ginsberg the American Beat poet. I too feel the same. We are all buds filled with goodness, talent, and the want to do something good in this world. Pretty much like the Sunflower, we too need an inspiration. To bloom, to bring happiness to those around us, and to showcase our true potential.

I hope to participate in the Honey Do challenge too on sunflowers at the end of the month. Maybe by then, I could whip up a necklace.

I can never make it to the We’re All Ears challenge, which is too bad as no art beads are required and you can rely on pure inspiration! And you just did! Fibonacci? OK, I’ve heard about him but Fibonacci and sunflower? I am learning so much from your blog 🙂 Clever use of bead caps and smart re-purposing of ready-made earrings!

I am always late for the challenge so this time I posted a day early so that I do not forget!! You still have a days’ time so please do join in. Yes, sunflowers are the classic examples of golden proportions as you can actually count the pollens and petals (they will be in the Fibonacci series)

I love the way you translate the inspirations, Miss Divya! I like the sweet petal shapes tumbling in the first. And those little mirrors are so sweet! They would reflect light and be so enticing in person! I love that you wrote: “We are all buds filled with goodness, talent, and the want to do something good in this world.” Yes! Keep on sharing your goodness, talent and good with the world! Enjoy the day! Erin

Thank you for choosing Sunflowers as the inspiration. I was in need of some happy , me time therapy this month and the working on these earrings gave me that

These designs show you don’t need a great variety of beads and components to make lovely earrings. Bravo!

Yes Janine, I do love repurposing what I already have with me

So delicate and sweet. Oh, and the second pair included mirrors which I love…light and brightness. You also have a wonderful way with words; what a pleasure to read your blog. xo

I love both pairs of your earrings! That first pair is just so sweet and delicate… and I bet they have great movement too. The second pair looks like you’re wearing the sun! Super fun! I hope you will join us for the Honey Do List challenge too. You can do it!!
