Orange Moth Earrings

I love the monthly We’re All Ears challenge at the Earring Everyday blog where Ms. Erin comes up with the most fascinating of inspirations every month. This Month the inspiration chosen is that of moths and I chose the Orange Moth as my inspiration. Each month, when the post announcing the inspiration comes up, I make a mental note to participate and then forget it. That is until the third Wednesday or Thursday of the month. Then it is a mad scramble to create a piece, photograph it, write a post and publish it all within the next 1-1.5 days. However, this time when I saw one the inspiration pictures, I had an aaha moment. I had just made a pair that was perfect for this inspiration.

Truth be told, I had just started work on my new collection “Patinam” (meaning City though the word specifically refers to Chennai City). I am working with bits of fabric trying to make beads and cords out of them. It is a long labourious process with the end result being tricky. To break the monotony, I made a pair of hoop earrings, using a bright orange ribbon with gold spots and a dark brown edge. I usually shy away from using orange in my work as I do not know what to pair with it. But this was so easy. After I completed the earrings, I made a few beads of the same materials and quickly strung it together with other glass beads.

Here are the fabric covered metal hoops – the Orange Moth Earrings. They are made with machine embroidered ribbon on golden hoop base.Though the back of the ribbon had black spots like the inspiration image, the front was evenly glossy and smooth. So I ended up choosing the front itself. Initially, I wanted to embellish the earrings with beads or chain, but I somehow like it plain like this as it lets the beauty of the ribbon come through.

Though I made them three weeks back, I just photographed them (Facepalm moment). Do check out what other designers have made for this challenge here.

I am planning to exhibit my new collection “Patinam” that is inspired by Chennai during the Madras Week celebrations, this time next week. If you are in Chennai, I would love for you to come say hello and take a look at the goodies.
The Exhibition would be at
The Press Institute of India, next to Asian College of Journalism, Taramani
On 25th August from 4 PM to 5 PM

However, I am not even halfway through it thanks to my day job. Things are crazy at the moment and my living room looks like clearance sale warehouse with stuff everywhere. Hopefully, I will get it under control and post about it soon.

I hope you found it interesting
Cheers

Fabulous earrings and ribbon! I feel that you don’t have to add anything to them, the bright colors and contrast are sufficient! I have used ribbon in the past and it is such a gratifying material. I am looking forward to what I am sure will be a fantastic new collection!

The earrings are beautiful and so unique! What a great idea. The asymmetry of the necklace is perfect. I struggle with making asymmetric pieces but you pulled it all together and made it work. Beautiful and unique—two great words to describe your work!

Wow Mary – thank you for that fantastic compliment. I love asymmetry and find it easier to do that symmetry. I was one of those kids in school who couldn’t draw a straight line and still have difficultly in drawing symmetrical objects – even basic shapes

You are always coming up with something new and exciting, Miss Divya! I am honored that you enjoy the challenges I put forth. Knowing that makes it all worth it (and reminds me that I don’t have long to find a new challenge!). I love the way this texture and color and pattern of the material really captures the moth wings. I love them just as they are! Best wishes on launching this new line and your event coming up! Enjoy the day! Erin
P.S. I typically forget about my own challenge until the night before myself! Ha! So we are in good company!

Thank you. The event went off well. Haaa, that has surely put me in good spirits. I am eagerly looking forward to the challenge that you are going to put forth next month. I would be honoured if I could could you choose an inspiration for a month’s challenge.
