Dhathu – The Splendor of peacocks

As I mentioned in my last post on Dhathu – Metal Jewelry collection, where I presented the mood and colors, This was a truly experimental collection and a big learning curve for me. To be frank I have been thinking about doing a metal collection since 2011 (when I attended Abhushan) and final when I saw patina inks from Vintaj I couldnt resist myself. I wanted to create something using color inks but in a manner that was very new. I also wanted to make an Indian collection (as our festive season is here) and I knew that the “real concept” of patina will not work here. Thats when I decided to do enamelling effects or fine painting on metal. I choose brass as my material as its rich and Indian and I also experimented a bit with Aluminum. As my concept was “Life forms” I choose different categories – flowers, leaves and birds (aquatic & land). Then I narrowed my focus on the traditional motifs in these categories – Mor -peacock, Parrot, Swan (hamsa), Fish (matsya), Red Lotus, peepal leaf, banyan leaf and lotus leaves.  To begin with here is the collection of my peacock inspired pieces.

The First one is Mor Vilap which means Chatter of peacocks.Inspired by the beauty of peacocks, this is a form folded Necklace in brass that has been hand cut, textured, (can you make out the difference in texture at the neck and feathers??) shaped and styled with Vintaj patina inks by me. Though this is direct peacock representation, I believe that the agate stones and multiple strands of looped seed beads add to the richness of the piece.

Favoured by Gods and mortals alike, a peacock feather has always been the embodiment of love and beauty; so how do I miss that? This is again form folded asymmetric chain necklace in 30g brass has been hand cut, textured, shaped and styled with patina inks and bead.

After making a couple of literal peacock pieces I wanted to make something more abstract, inspired by the beauty of peacocks. This set has teardrop shaped focal components in brass that has been hand cut, textured, shaped and styled by me.To compliment the beautiful patina -the gloss and texture of the pattern will remind you of a gorgeous silk saree,I have used “S” hook double layered chain in bright gold color and the earrings have hand formed brass ear hooks

And finally peacock earrings created from easily available peacock components – the best seller (fastest seller) of this entire collection. Never believed that peacocks would be so popular when I designed them and nowI see everyone making peacocks in silver, different clays, with stones…and to think peacock isnt on any trend list !Here’s to the beautiful National bird of India – Peacock!!

I will post leaf based designs in my next installment. In the meanwhile you can check out the entire collection at my Facebook page or my new WIX website that I designed and created by myself to offer some of my regular clients a preview before the launch of the collection for pre-booking. That technique worked so I might continue doing it for my future collections too. Looking for feedback on the site too 😀

I hope you find it interesting
Cheers
