Structured paper earrings – We’re All Ears Challenge

disc paper earrings

I am happy that for once I am early with my We’re All Ears Challenge post, without scrambling for designs at the last moment after the reveal post has gone up on the main blog. 🙂 Before I pat myself on the back for being on time, I must confess that this happened as I had already made structured paper earrings for my Paprika Collection (unveil very soon) and felt that 2 of the three paper earrings I made were a perfect fit to be showcased here. Read along, and I will tell you why.

We’re All Ears :: April Inspiration – The City of Arts and Sciences

My take on the inspiration: Two things caught my eye about the inspiration pictures; one the lighting – how the building is lit up and how it looks against the blue sky. Secondly the shape of the buildings – they are geometric, either angular or hemispherical in form, conveying a very edgy, futuristic almost alien like feeling. I felt that though the buildings were structured (huge and strong) they felt light and weightless as if the mutliple layers used to create them were made of paper. Hence Paper earrings !!

Spiky disc earrings: Compressed paper disc earrings created with paper, foil , ice resin and iced enamels relique. The silver spikes lend it a very edgy look making it perfect for a club night out and these earrings are super light to wear

Compressed paper earrings created with paper, foil, inks, ice resin and iced enamels relique. The shape is art deco inspired – angular, pointy and unusual.
Both earrings are made of multiple layers so you get a feeling that something is floating in between the base and front layer bringing in a sense of movement and fluidity, though the structure is very solid

Our Inspiration

The City of Arts and Sciences is an impressive complex located in Valencia, Spain. Created as a way to honor the melding of science, technology, nature and art, the buildings were conceived and designed by renowned Spanish architects Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela. These are amazing – using simple materials to form them into such lovely designs. I am particularly drawn to the second pair as they look like a bit like pottery shards. What a great interpretation!! xx

Now that you mention it, they do remind me of pottery shards – they are smooth, glossy, colorful and fragile!
