For the last four months, I have spent most evenings, nights, all holidays and weekends working a special project. I am super excited to finally show it to you. Titled Jewelry in Narratives, this project as a virtual exhibition is presented by
New York City Jewelry Week 2021 as a durational event.
Jewelry in narratives project featured in NYCJW
Although most pieces of jewelry are small, they are powerful. Their functions extend beyond adornment. Their power comes from what they signify. Jewelry in narratives examines how a piece of jewelry transcends the role of adornment into one of signification. It throws under spotlight how this signification is constructed in Indian literature – both written and oral. It brings to the surface ideas that are deeply rooted in culture about the power of jewelry and how it can be represented as art jewelry.
Jewelry in narratives project is a curation of myths, legends, and folklore from India that revolve around jewelry. Experience the stories as text, videos and as wearable art jewelry that is created using the techniques of Tholu Bommalata – shadow leather puppetry as described in my post on Bommalu.
All the artwork for the project has been created by me and Mr. Sinde Sriramulu, master craftman, Tholu Bommalata craft. Each piece corresponds to a story and has been meticuously hand painted, making each piece of jewelry a work of art. I have also re-told the stories that I have collected for the project, dabbled with photography and designed and created the website.
Read the stories, watch the performances and shop the jewelry at the virtual exhibition of the project featured in NYCJW at Jewelry in narratives website.
