Of Designing in classic blue

The September theme of the Art Elements Challenge was blue. For once, I was early in finishing all my pieces. But without a reminder to write a post, let it drag on until I realised September was over and October is here. As they say better late than never (I wonder who says it thought!), here is the blog reveal of my attempts of designing in Classic blue.

Of Designing in classic blue

Classic Blue is the is the colour of the year 2020. At the beginning of the year, I wrote a post describing the psychology of the colour blue in detail. I also discussed several colour palettes of Pantone involving blue. However, for this challenge I wanted to go as monochromatic as possible. I made a mat, a long tassel necklace and a couple of gemstone jewellery illustrations.

Let’s Mat

I came across some fluffy blue yarn as I was cleaning my cupboard during lockdown in May-June. It was a sample from a Prime event several years ago. I had previously made a tasseld choker with it and posted a tutorial as well. However, bulk of the yarn remained. I decided to make a spiral mat by crocheting a long chain using the yarn and then spiraling and sewing it as I went. It would have taken lesser time to crochet the whole thing but I did not have an appropriate hook and was managing with whatever I had. Yes, designing and making this mat in blue was time consuming but its a useful product that adorns my center table and is big enough if someone wants to use it on the floor to sit as well.

Blue Sautoir

A sautoir is a long chain or bead based tassel necklace. It can also be a long open chain that can be bunched together wit ha brooch so that the ends fall like a tassel. While I have made several tassel necklaces in the past, this is my first sautoir with wire components. I created crazy wire and bead components which are freeform wire forms.  I later linked them together with chain. It was hard to photograph the piece to show the different components; believe me it looks much better in person.

Gemstone jewellery illustrations

As I was doing gemstone illustration demos for my students, I did a couple with blue gemstones to add to this challenge reveal. Primarily, I have used colour pencils on brown paper along with black marker, glass marker pencil and white uniball marker. The blue gemstone jewellery contains gemstones such as blue sapphire, iolite and pearls.

Those were my efforts of Designing in classic blue. I hope you enjoyed looking at them. The theme of October’s challenge is gothic. I hope to not only finish on time but post on time as well this month.

I hope you found it interesting
Cheers

I don’t remember seeing your 4th of July choker necklace. That is quite an interesting piece!

I remember seeing this post but somehow haven’t commented?! Anyway, I love the mat – years ago I thought of making one myself but never got even close 🙂 It sure looks light and soft. I love your jewelry illustrations, too, one can almost see how the jewelry looks in person 🙂

I too was wondering where you have been as I haven’t seen a comment from you in weeks. I hope you are fine and doing well. The mat is very simple to make, its just time consuming. Its great if you have episodes of a TV show lined up to binge watch.
