Star themed jewellery for Art Elements Challenge

The November Challenge reveal at Art Elements  is inspired by Stars. When I read the post I knew that I would be participating in it with some Star themed jewellery. To Quote AJE – This month’s challenge is to interpret the stars as we see them, in astrology, Celtic art, magic, beautiful quotes, decorative arts, jewellery, painting, etc. It is no big surprise that I made Star themed jewellery. However, you might be surprised to hear of my inspiration – Nursery Rhymes. Yes! I picked rhymes like Twinkle Twinkle little star, At night I see the twinkling stars and many more to make my pieces.

The Lone Star

I spent a good part of my childhood and teenage star gazing. There was even a special star that I would talk to. I would sometimes pray to that star and ask for wishes. It might sound crazy but it really helped me through the times when I was sick or felt lonely. I miss the clear unpolluted skies of my Childhood town. An apartment with no open space and polluted skies make it hard to star gaze. However, Even now, whenever I see a lone bright star, I feel reassured, that things would get better.

Thus was born the lone star earrings that combine rich blue oval beads with lampwork glass stars. I rarely combine bright white with royal blue as it reminds me of school uniforms. So this is a one off design for me that really draws from my memories.

Star light, star bright,
First star I see tonight,
I wish I may, I wish I might,
Have the wish I wish tonight.

The constellation of stars earrings

I bought these star beads while working on Parampare as I wanted to do a planetarium themed piece. However, that idea didn’t work out. I finally made these earrings a couple of months back. I also made another pair with green stones for sisters who wanted similar bejeweled beauties.

If there is ever a rhyme that describes these earrings, then it might be Twinkle, twinkle little star.

Twinkle, twinkle little star
How I wonder what you are.
Up above the world so high
Like a diamond in the sky.

Star Brooch cum Pendant

I made the Brooch cum Pendant (the first image of this post) one night when I was super tired running behind teenagers all day, unable to catch up on any reading or research. I hadn’t made any jewellery in a week as well. So I took some wire and a box of orphan beads and made this star burst ornament. I posted a picture on inst and a lovely lady wanted a slightly smaller one for herself. The second, seen below (sorry about the bad mobile phone picture) was for her. I used a thicker wire and made a bail.

You see, I wore mine a meeting all day long and it flopped at the end of the day as it was too big and wasn’t sturdy. So I learned from the experience. However, since my client liked the shabby twists of wire in the original which gave it an organic feel, I retained that. These pendants remind me of this following rhyme. Do you get the connection?

At night I see the twinkling stars
And a great big smiling moon.
My mother tucks me into bed
And sings a good-night tune.

Autumnal Stars necklace

Finally here is a necklace from Riti that is represents a starry sky on an autumn night. It is not the regular representation of a starry night sky but I feel it makes it interesting. This particular piece is from a set that is inspired by seasons – months and festivals. It is made using recycled and repurposed materials like the other pieces and focuses on sensorial stimuli.     I loved the brooch the minute I saw it on Instagram but never thought of it as a bursting star. Yes! This is a fabulous interpretation, Divya! The constellation earrings are more of a OOAK design than the first pair but royal blue and sparkling white is so good for a starry night (rhyming not intended). And your usual dark props is the best for this theme!

      I was obsessed with stars while making that brooch so it kinda manifested the same way. My dark background is actually a small cheap wood stool that I painted (Shh!! its my secret)

    This is a great post and your pieces are always so colorful and inspiring, I love all of them but if I had to choose a favorite it would be the brooch/pendant, it is so unique!

    Those earrings are lovely even if they remind you of school uniforms! The clear beautiful colors of the glass are just perfect. Your necklace is lovely and reallly evokes a starry autumn night. But what fascinates me the most are your wire brooch/pendants. The fact that you just sat down with some orphan beads and came up with this on a whim, is amazing. The colors and the randomness of the placement with the twisting wire is really eye catching!

    What a fantastic interpretation of the challenge. I like your nursery rhyme take on it. That pendant is so fun.
    I have to admit that I don’t get the connection with the rhyme though. What am I missing?

      I guess I should have explained it. I made it late at night, half asleep (and my mom chiding me that how I don’t sleep properly) which explains the night part of the rhyme. The beads all around are the twinkling stars that surround the big moon, which is the center space.

    I loved your interpretations! I too – recited the “First star” nightly during my teenage years. The twisted twinkle brooch pendant is whimsical, the autumn stars is so lush! I love the palette and the touches of embroidered fabric!

      I wore green and white to school but the school opposite mine had their uniform as blue and white. So its kind of seared in my mind that they are uniform colours..haaa

    Divya, I didn’t have a uniform to wear in any of my schools, and none of them had blue and white as school colors either. I love the first pair for all the reasons that Cathy evoked. I love that cobalt blue color, like the lapis that I used. Anything freeform gets my vote, so in 2nd place is your brooch cum pendant.

      Like I mentioned to Anita, I grew up watching kids at a neighbouring school wear blue and white all day and it sort of bored into my head. Thus it is combination I rarely use in my work. But seeing the many positive comments, I am glad I tried it. I think I’ll do a necklace too in this combo

      Thanks Maya. Of allnursery rhymes, I think that sat themed rhymes are common in a lot of cultures. The Magic of the stars is what I feel in these rhymes
