Rainbow moonstone

rainbow moonstone

As a kid there was one gemstone I wasn’t particularly fond of. Much to my shock I found out that it was also my “Birthstone”. That stone is moonstone! I found the lack of colour disappointing when compared to the gorgeous reds and greens of rubies and emerald. That is, until I discovered the Rainbow moonstone – a gem so beautiful and mysterious.

Composition of Rainbow moonstone

Rainbow moonstone, also known as white labradorite, is a unique variety of feldspar mineral known as orthoclase. It is composed primarily of potassium aluminum silicate, with trace amounts of other elements contributing to its iridescent sheen and color play. The mesmerizing phenomenon known as adularescence, which gives rainbow moonstone its distinctive appearance, is caused by light scattering between microscopic layers within the crystal structure.

The composition of rainbow moonstone can vary slightly depending on its specific mineral makeup and geological origin. The minerals in the composition are potassium, aluminium, silicon, oxygen and a few trace elements.

Raw and Polished rainbow moonstone

Indian stones (from Rajasthan) have rainbow firing while Sri Lankan stones have a blue streak in them. This blue light is caused by interference, diffraction and diffusion phenomenon of light by very less concentrations within the stone. Additionally, Gemstone deposits have been found in Tanzania, Madagascar and the United States. Gemstone quality is usually referred to as A, AA, AAA with AAA being the highest quality.

Gemstone associations

The rainbow moonstone has a tangible connection to the power of the moon. It is considered mysterious, mystical and has been used to convey the matters of the head and the heart. It has also played the role of a protective talisman for many journey – the outward physical ones to metaphysical inward – self realisation. Rainbow moonstones are said to have psychic protection abilities. The help calm the mind, clear stress and offer lucid dreams. When aligned with Goddess Gaea, they help channelise energy and positive consciousness.

I am a "June girl" also, so moonstone is my birthstone as well. Although, depending on the source, so are pearls and alexandrite. I would dearly love to win a beautiful rainbow moonstone cabochon, and can imagine many ways to set it off beautifully!
