Amethyst – The Birthstone of February

Every month carries its own unique essence, represented by a gemstone believed to possess special significance. February, is encapsulated by the allure of the amethyst. It is also the traditional gift for the 6th wedding anniversary. While I have used amethyst in radiant orchid jewellery before in my Sudya collection, this is my first post that discusses amethyst as the birthstone of February.

Composition

The gemstone Amethyst is a variety of quartz, composed primarily of silicon dioxide (SiO2). What distinguishes amethyst from other quartz varieties is its characteristic purple color, which is due to trace amounts of iron or manganese within the crystal lattice. The intensity of the purple hue can vary depending on the concentration of these impurities, as well as external factors such as exposure to heat or radiation. Amethyst is found in Russia, Brazil, United States and Africa. India had deposits of pale amethyst a long time ago. Sometimes it is banded with Citrine, a yellow coloured gemstone.

Amethyst Lore

The word “amethyst” is derived from the Greek word amethystos, meaning “not intoxicated.” It was believed to ward off the effects of alcohol and promote sobriety. Dionysus, the god of wine, once pursued a woman named Amethyst. As she sought refuge from his advances, she was transformed into a clear crystal by the goddess Artemis. Dionysus poured wine over the crystal trying to revive her but it only stained it purple. Paradoxically, St. Valentine is rumoured to have worn an amethyst ring carved with the image of Cupid as a symbol of love.

Amethyst – The Birthstone of February

The tradition of assigning specific gemstones to each month gained popularity during the 18th century. Amethyst was chosen as the birthstone for February due to its association with clarity of mind, wisdom, and inner strength. Its mesmerizing colour ranges from delicate lilacs to deep, regal purples, evoking a sense of calm. The colour also symbolises royalty, spirituality, and enlightenment.

Amethyst is used in crystal healing, particularly in alleviating headaches, insomnia, and stress-related ailments. It is believed to stimulate the third eye chakra, promoting a deeper understanding of the self and the universe.

Amethyst in Jewelry

Once considered expensive, amethyst’s exquisite beauty made it a cherished gemstone in the world of jewellery. They have been used to make parure (sets) and rivière necklace by the French and tiaras by Russians. Cartier has made several delicious amethyst pieces over the years, including the The Duchess of Windsor necklace. At the present its affordability, availability and hardness (7 on the Mohs scale) makes it a popular choice for jewellery making.

I own two pairs of amethyst studs – both gifts. One was gifted by a family friend when I was a child and the other was an impulsive gift from my father for scoring 94% in 10th grade. I was so in love with the first, that I begged my father to allow me to choose the mysterious purple gemstone earrings as my present. However, it has been many years since I have worn them. After multiple trials, I have accepted that the colour purple and the gemstone are really unlucky for me. Considering that the blue sapphire doesn’t suit me either, I fear that the “curse of the Delhi sapphire,” a famous amethyst may be true.

Regardless of my experiences, I am enchanted by the colour and look of amethyst and would love to create jewellery with it in the future. What about you? Do you like amethyst and use it in your work or wear it? Please do share your stories about the gemstone in the comments. Read more about gemstones in violet here.

I hope you find it interesting

Cheers

I love amethyst! It’s stunning both with gold and silver! It’s a pity you don’t wear the earrings – I would try them on from time to time to just check if the “curse” is still valid 🙂

I used to do that in the past. Now, I take them in my hands, longingly look at them and put them back. Maybe when I have more courage…..
