The moon has been an immense source of inspiration for many artists, writers, and makers. I am no different. Recently, I created a small collection of festive necklaces inspired by the moon. The aim was to create a collection of simple necklaces that are versatile, light weight and look elegant. Silver is the go to choice for lunar-themed jewellery. However, I chose to create my new collection of “To the moon” jewellery using brass and copper. I hope you enjoyed looking at the necklaces that used copper pendants. Here is the range of Moon inspired brass jewellery for you.
Moon inspired brass jewellery
For this collection, I began with a flat brass metal sheet as my base. To create the moon’s cratered texture, I used a ball peen hammer. In this manner, through hammering, I achieved the desired moon-inspired texture. This is quite a departure from the range of To the moon copper jewellery where I experimented with various techniques such as dimpling, form folding and air chasing. Instead of highlighting the craters and ridges as I did with copper pendants, I focussed on the reflective surface of the moon with brass pendants. They are polished to a high shine. You can keep the shine up in after care by rubbing only the pendants with a cloth saturated with white vinegar and salt and then wiping it with a clean cloth.
Shapes
I cut out specific shapes for the pendants. Circle to represent the full moon, semi-circle to represent the half moon, teardrop and crescent to symbolise the waning phases of the moon.
Patwa Cord necklaces
Patwa craft involves the intricate weaving of colourful cords using cotton, viscose or silk threads. Skilled artisans, known as “Patwas,” meticulously create these cords by hand, employing a combination of weaving, twisting, and knotting techniques. Macramé techniques are also incorporated as well as brass beads such as those made using the lost was technique such as Dokra. A Patwa cord is known for its versatility and utility and showcases the artisan’s expertise.
The pieces are really light and easy to wear even on a humid day making them great alternatives for both gold jewellery as well as a heavy costume jewellery that tarnish easily. I hope you enjoy wearing them.
Which one of these do you like the most? Do tell me in the comments.
I hope you found it interesting
Cheers
