In December 2021, I worked on a custom design for a friend who likes to get her special occasion jewellery made by me. This time, the occasion was Christmas. She had a lovely, subtly Ponduru Khadi saree and a silk blouse that she wanted jewellery for. After an initial discussion, I told her about the Jewelry in Narratives project and asked her if she would be interested in the available pieces. She was taken up with the Sakuntala flower earrings and requested that I make a leather flower jewellery set for her.
Yellow leather flower jewellery set
The design brief was to create jewellery that would match the outfit. To make costume jewellery in its literal sense. I studied the images of the outfits that she sent me (as seen below). As the saree was soft and slightly dull for a festive occasion, I decided to make a pendant necklace and statement earrings. I drew and painted the flower earrings and small bib like pendant of flowers on leather. Since she was planning on wearing a dark green blouse, I chose dark green agate beads to complete the necklace.
This leather flower jewellery set design isn’t a storytelling piece. However, I still I drew and painted in Tholu Bommalata style, keeping up with the original design from JIN, that she liked. She said that she loved it when she received it and that what makes me glad.
Yellow flower earrings and ring
Most of my regular readers would know that I seldom make multiples of a design. However, in this instance, I made another pair of the yellow flower earrings and a ring. The earrings are for a fellow educator and the ring is for me. I might make another pair of earrings for myself in the future as well.
While “Jewelry in Narratives” was initially structured for production work, with the artisan that I collaborated with making the pieces, I chose to make these flowers earrings, pendant and ring myself. Mainly because, I love to draw and ofcourse make jewellery and this allows me to do both at the same time.
With the increased responsibilities in my day job, I don’t think that I will make a summer collection this year. However, I am still doing and will continue to do custom orders ( I made 4 resin pendants and 2 necklaces recently). I will be teaching a class on costume jewellery as well this year and hopefully I will be creating some interesting pieces there.
So what have you been upto in the jewellery and craft front recently? Do tell me in the comments.
I hope you find it interesting
Cheers
