4 Essential Tips When Buying Crystals

Know Your Crystals

It’s crucial to have a clear idea about the rare mineral or rock you want before choosing a vendor. Different crystal formations and species exist, and these variations have unique properties that separate each rock from the other. Here are a few crystals to consider for you to add to your collection:

  • Amethyst
  • Citrine
  • Fluorite
  • Garnet
  • Malachite
  • Quartz

Perhaps, you might consider choosing an amethyst for its striking purple color. Conversely, you might opt to select fluorite for its fluorescent glow when struck with an ultraviolet (UV) light. You can also pick a garnet because it resonates with your birth month. However, don’t waste your cash because you bought a crystal by its looks alone. Know your preferred gemstones before buying them so you won’t have any regret after the purchase.

Consider Healing Crystals

You might want certain minerals because of their beautiful sheen. Conversely, there are those that consider buying a crystal because of its healing properties. Particular groups find crystals to promote healing properties to their owners. For example, holding a diamond in your hand while you meditate may help express eternal love. Otherwise, you might wear a DIY pendant with druzy quartz, as this rock may help transmute negative energy to positive vitality. If you’re attuned to your spiritual origins, select a beautiful rock because of its healing characteristics. Try wearing a crystal that you believe may help you in a particular aspect you’re lacking.

Avoid Fakes

Remember, not all things that glitter are gold. Consequently, not all gems that shine brightly are real. Unfortunately, scammers will run off with your hard-earned cash by selling fake crystals. But, you might find it challenging to discern real minerals from artificial rocks. Here’s a quick guide to help you spot legitimate crystals from fake manifestations:

Irradiation

Irradiated crystals are rocks bonded with different metal coatings using heat to make the surface look pretty. While these rocks do shine brightly, they tend to come from a lab, thus, it’s not naturally-made.

Dyes

Take a look at the following example: a real turquoise may have an expensive price tag. It also has a relatively natural color on it. But, a fake turquoise looks cheap thanks to the application of dyes. Also, real turquoise looks solid, while its artificial counterpart might have weird cracks.

Overpriced or Under priced

You might find fake crystals that look cheap but have high prices. It’s because scammers might like to charge expensively for their merchandise to lure unsuspecting buyers. An expensive crystal need not be real. On the flip side, they aren’t cheap either.

Look for Detailed Information

Avoid buying fakes from fraudulent providers by checking the product information of each item on sale. The item listing should have the specimen’s condition, size, and other properties that are worthy to note. Also, check for online reviews pointing to your supplier. Understanding which country or region the crystal is from will also help you find the right supplier. Quartz crystals are the most common in India. Known as Sphatik or Spatika clear-colourless crystals are considered holy and are used in meditation and for worship. However, since they are easily available, you will find them even in tiny shops around famous temples in India.

These tips may help you in your search and decision-making when buying crystals. You might consider buying these gems because you want to set raw crystals to other materials to form pieces of jewelry. True crystals are different from crystal beads used to make popular jewellery. Crystal beads are simply glass or acrylic faceted in the shape of rondelles or bicones. Swarovski crystals also fall into this category. It is okay to buy as use them as long as you know what it is that you are paying for.

Useful information, Divya! When I started buying natural stones several years ago, I didn’t realize some might be fake. I’ve read that color enhanced is OK just must be explicitly pointed out. I gradually realized that some natural stones are just dyed to look like some more expensive ones. I get big specimens for wrapping from companies that are in this business and not from re-sellers. But one can never be sure about strung beads.

very true, most of the times the beads and stones are enhanced – that is heated or dyed. But sometime they are synthetic and lab manufactured. Unless you know the supplier it is quite difficult to find out if the stone is natural or enhanced when buying them online
