Autumn earrings and the exoticity of seasons

Over the years, I have had students make mood boards or even theme boards based on seasons. The boards would invariably have the following pictures. There would be Cherry blossoms for spring. A clear beach in blue -green sparkling waters and beige sand with little striped sailboats or beach umbrellas. There would be images of bright orange and red leaves for Autumn and a snow covered landscape for winter.

I would be patient most of the times, and approve these boards. However, there would be times when I would ask them in frustration if they have ever seen a Spring/summer/Autumn/Winter season that looked the way it did in their pictures. Till date, I have not had a single instance when that question was answered with an affirmative. Nevertheless, they would continue to harp on it fascinated by natural colours of Foreign lands. Such is the exoticity of seasons.

Ode to Autumn : We’re all ears – September 2018 – Challenge

Why am I talking about seasons, you may ask. I was in Bangalore recently, staying at a residential area full of parks and trees which I do not get to see in Chennai. Everyday, as I walked through the lanes, I saw heaps of leaves at the sides of the roads. Leaves in green fading; leaves in yellow, dull orange, light brown, and an unsaturated burgundy.  There were dull as fall is supposed to be – not as saturated as you see in wallpapers images on the net. Still, they were the brightest fall colours I have personally ever seen in my life. So I took a picture and edited the saturation to make it bright without making it look unnatural.

Not I will cut this prelude short and jump into what you are here for – jewellery. We’re all ears  september theme is Ode to Autumn and I am making 3 pairs of Autumn earrings for the reveal. All of the Autumn earrings are sold.

The first pair is simple. It has three beads each on wire headpins to create beaded stud earrings. It is a mixed metals piece with the wire spiral in copper and the brass in golden finish. I have used the colours like yellow orange, orange, green and copper-gold from my inspiration image to create this pair.

Cocoon earrings – Orange Mittai

This is the orange version of my hit cocoon earrings. My mom tells me that I loved the colour orange as a kid. I had a fuzzy orange dress made of shiny chenille yarn when I was about 6-7 years old. She would call me orange mittai (orange candy) whenever I would wear it and I loved it. It is hard to imagine me wearing something fuzzy in orange now. However, I think there would be others, like this client of mine who I made these earrings for, who love orange.

Of Fallen leaves and the evening sun

As I mentioned before, Autumns in Trichy (I am yet to see a proper Autumn in Chennai) were in tints, tones and shades of yellow and brown. Only the leaves croton plants that were burgundy to begin with would remain in that colour. However, the fallen brown leaves in the glowing evening sun would look golden. That scene is my inspiration for this pair of long brown wooden earrings.

Those are my three Autumn earrings for the reveal coupled with some of my memories. If you are a musically inspired person, I would like to point you to an older post from my Ragamala Series on Bhairav Raga, which is the musical node for Autumn. I had written that post in 2014 for Octoberfest.

Now let’s hop around and look at some fabulous earrings made by those participating in this reveal on the Earrings Everyday blog.

hope you found it interesting
Cheers

Wonderful collection of earrings. I love the wire work in the first pair. The second pair is so much fun. The third one is very classy.

Thanks Janine for your kind compliments

I love all three pair of your autumn earrings. Although I am an orange person and love bright colors, the last pair is my favorite. It looks to me like the autumn here right now, and I love the mix of materials.

Thanks Ann, of the three, that is my favourite pair too

Well, I have actually made pictures of autumn in my country that are quite breathless and while not being my favourite season (I am more for nature awakening and blooming) the fall palette never fails to amaze me! Your earrings are fantastic!

We get tiny snatches of Spring were I live and I do enjoy it. But I look forward to experiencing Autumn when I can. Particularly when I don’t have to be the one to rake the fallen leaves

All three of your creations are beautiful and look exotic. I cannot agree more on the change of scene that autumn would have brought as someone who has lived in Chennai. That is the first thing that fascinated me when I moved abroad. More than the cold winter or harsh summers.

Haa… I am glad that you get my point. I have only experienced Summers (and rainy season) abroad. I am yet to see the striking spring, Autumn or winter

You know, I guess I didn’t consider that fall/autumn in other parts of the world would look completely different! We get all the seasons in those stereotypical ways you described (minus the beach scenes as I am landlocked, but beaches here are on the shores of heavily wooded lakes). The fall really is vibrant in color around here. Yes, there is a healthy dose of browns but even those have such a variety of hues that it is hard not to love them! I didn’t appreciate rust and brown as a child, but I sure love it now! I am not surprised all these earrings are sold. That last pair is so very elegant, yet rustic and simple. If they weren’t sold I would make you sell them to me! Thanks for always playing along with me in the We’re All Ears challenge. I adore having your worldly perspective! Enjoy the day! Erin

In my opinion, this exchange of cross cultural ideas across geographical boundaries is what makes this challenge special. For that I truly thank you Ms. Erin. I am so glad that you found me pieces worthy enough to buy. I hope that I do get to make something for you soon

Lovely earrings as always, Divya! Much of our perception – not just of autumn, even that of things like beaches – is tinted with pictures and ideas we continually come across. It is for that reason that your last pair of earrings is my favorite – it comes with a touch of local reality. 🙂

    1. jewelsofsayuri avatar

Thank you. For the exact same reason the last pair is my favourite as well

They’re all so fabulous, each with their own allure. Down in the south US, we don’t get much color-changing of the leaves either. We have to head up along the eastern coast to see anything like the brilliant stock-photo pictures. It’s a dream of mine to do that one day. But, I get what you mean completely!

    1. jewelsofsayuri avatar

Oh, is that so? I was under the impression that Autumn in in all of US looks the same. LOL How silly of me!

Ha, same here – the colors of fall are predominantly yellow and dull brown but some new exotic park trees with brighter colors have been planted lately and we enjoy a more beautiful view. Your cocoon earrings are a real hit, indeed, dying being a huge part of it and these are gorgeous. I have been uninspired by autumn as a youngster but later fell under its spell 🙂

I remember sweeping my yard as a kid and hating Autumn because I would have to sweep it almost everyday. So I too hated it when I was younger. Without the work I might have enjoyed it I think.

Beautiful interpretations of this theme and the season in general. One thing I love about autumn is that the colors are not as vivid as they seem in spring and summer. The muted palette feels more relaxing to me. Also, your photo of the leaves by your feet is superb.

    1. jewelsofsayuri avatar

Thank you Tammy. Between 13-22 I dressed in mid tones and autumn palette so I get what you mean

Lovely! I think my favorites are those orange cocoons! So fun. The idea of little girl you in your fuzzy orange dress made me smile.

Haaa…My parents smile too whenever we talk about that dress of mine. I wish I had a photo of me in that dress
