Men’s Guide to Buying a Custom Engagement Ring

engagement ring

Let’s face it, buying an engagement ring is probably the only time most men will ever shop for jewelry. At all other times, especially while picking out fancy jewelry, men prefer to take their mothers, sisters or significant others to the jewelry store and have them pick the piece of jewelry they love the most.

But that is not the case with engagement rings. Engagement rings have to be a surprise and taking the easy way out simply won’t cut it. To pick out the perfect engagement ring and not spoil the surprise, you have to do some research. What kind of jewelry does your future spouse loves, does she have any material or gemstone preferences, etc? Not every girl wants a solitaire ring like I do.

Engagement Ring Couple

Engagement rings are a big investment. So these days many couples decide to pick rings after the proposal and choose anything from engraved bands to rings with symbolic patterns on them. In traditional countries like India, Engagement rings are picked by the in-laws and gifted to the couple during the engagement ceremony. In most of these cases, the girls end up wearing the rings only when they meet the in-laws as the design is not according to their likes. That said, it is difficult to pick a ring off the shelf that truly represents your relationship.

But there’s a way to make sure the ring you pick out is the perfect one. Drum roll – Custom Engagement Rings. Having a ring tailored to your bride will ensure that she gets the ring she’d always dreamed of. It will be as unique as your love. A lot of jewelry companies like Emerson & Farrar Fine Jewelry who sell engagement rings also design custom ones. In this post, I would like to share a few simple guidelines for those intending to custom order an engagement ring.

Men’s Guide to Buying a Custom Engagement Ring

Ask How Long Will it Take

If you are planning to propose on a specific date, make sure you know if the custom engagement ring will be ready by that date. On average, jewelers need two weeks to create a straightforward ring design. For any special requests or unusual designs, be prepared to wait seven to eight weeks on average.

The Ring Style

There are numerous ring styles to choose from in the market. Vintage, classic, modern, edgy are all popular choices for a custom engagement ring. A ring style has to compliment her personal style, so you might also want to examine what she wears. Does she follow fashion or wear traditional outfits. Are her clothes conservative or provoking? All of these can help you pick out the perfect ring style. You must also consider her line of work. Women who work with pigments, chemicals or in the hospitality or medical industry do not wear chunky rings. It might be a good idea to consult with her friends and see if she shared any ring designs she likes with them. Checking out her pinterest profile (if she has one) will also give you good ideas about her taste.

Pick the right Gemstone

Picking out the right Gemstone is slightly more complicated than picking out the ring style as you have to consider the size, color, cut and clarity. Diamonds are the classic choice but you can also choose her birthstone or a stone of her favourite colour. If she prefers transparent diamonds, check out the GIA diamond color chart as not even all transparent diamonds are the same. If she prefers unusual rings, perhaps you should consider colored diamonds instead.

Pick the right gemstone shape

Next, you have to know what shape your future spouse prefers. There are many different ones to choose from including oval, pear, heart, round, square and more. Round brilliant cuts are by far the most popular, although square brilliant cuts are equally appealing.

Choosing the metal

Yellow gold and platinum are the traditional choices but you could choose white gold or rhodium polish if want a silverish look. However, there are other alternatives worth looking into. Perhaps she might love a two-tone combination of white and yellow gold or yellow and rose gold. The ring could also feature different finishes including matte, textured or bright polish.

Buying an engagement ring requires time and effort as it is metaphor of your love.  Getting the style or the gemstone wrong could lead to a lot of hassle and spoil the otherwise perfect moment. So if you cannot find anything your bride-to-be might like in ready to buy collections perhaps you should ask around for a designer or a jeweler who will custom make an engagement ring instead

Good points there, Divya! Some people among my customers had issues with a specific geometrical shape of the beads or spacers or faceted vs. smooth surface, for instance, so a thorough research into the matter is a must 🙂

I have had clients like that too. SI have found that many people dislike square or rectangular shapes in jewelry

Great post Divya. Me too face many difficulties while buying a ring as I am very fond of wearing rings. One of the common problem is the shape of the diamonds.

Selecting the right shape can be tough. While round is the all time classic, pear and princess can also look exquisite if set in the right way
