Here are some Pink and purple silk jewelry pieces that I made last year and forgot to share. Both the sets were made for family friends to dress them up for their relatives weddings. In my bridal party LOTD post I written about the grandeur of Indian marriages and how the guest’s attire is carefully scrutinised much more than any fashion week in the world. This is especially true in a close relative’s wedding.
Pink and purple stripe set
The first one is a Pink and purple silk jewelry set made to match this plain salmon pink saree that had checked borders in pink and purple. The original was to do a check weave in the jewelry too. But due to lack of time, we settled on stripes
The client was unsure about the jhumka even though she wears long earrings and it took a lot of convincing to get her to try one. I did the stripes on the jhumka and the bangles but was hesitant to do it on the pendant as it looked too matching – matching. I made the pendant two tiered with a minimal rhinestone lace border to keep it classy. The necklace is made of metal tubes and pearls and I added some silk thread to the tubes in order to tie all the pieces of the Pink and purple silk jewelry set together.
Rhinestone & Zardosi Set
The second set was for a childhood friend of mine whose husband’s cousin was getting married. I also made her two more sets and I will write about them in an upcoming post. She contacted me out the blue one day and asked me if I could make matching jewelry – earrings and bangles for a grand embroidered saree of hers. Through our discussion I came to know that it was originally her wedding reception saree but she never wore it as her wedding happened in the US and she felt that it was too grand to wear it then. Fast forward to now, she wanted to use her trousseau atleast once and wanted accessories in silk that would make the now out of fashion saree, trendier.
The saree and blouse (picture above left) were overflowing with bugle beads, zardosi* and rhinestone that I had no idea what would compliment it. Jhumkas felt too conventional so I suggested rhinestone chandbalis for the earrings. I decided to use double color threads to create a new look as solid silk jewelry is so passe’ now. I decided to work once again with Prakashini of Twilight charms to create bangles with zardosi work.
* Zardosi is a metallic colored metal spring (originally gold or silver) that is used in metal work embroidery and dimensional embroidery. Apart from sewing it can also be attaching by gluing as in these bangles.
We tried all sorts of designs for the bangle. From trying put the same motif that was on the saree in the bangle, to using bugle beads used in the embroidery nothing worked. It either looked too gaudy and stark white or had no relationship with the earring and the saree it was being designed for. After some 5-6 attempts, when I was about to give up Prakashini came up with the final design which fit the bill completely and the bangles were made.
That’s it for today folks, Pinks and purples aren’t really my kind of colors but I have learnt to like them in the course of designing jewelry. I’ll share the rest of the silk thread sets that I made soon. Till then keep your comments coming for that is what motivates me.
I hope you found it interesting
Cheers
