Having a design background has both pros and cons – while pros are far greater that the cons, we sometimes tend to over complicate our work, our designs and thereby our lives. I had this realisation sometime last year when I was making a session plan for my leather jewelry class – I had included nearly 6 sessions for flat leather jewelry. Apart from doing additive and subtractive processes (more on that later) we also did painted and embroidered pieces. This fired a spark in my head, making me want to create my own flat leather collection with hand painting. It was so simple that I hadn’t thought of it before but brilliant – it was Duh! moment.
So I got some VT or Vegetable tanned leather, a set of acrylic paints and created a collection based on one of the most fundamental elements of design – Lines and called it Xian
Xian- leather jewelry
“A Movement of dots or an object of breathless length, Lines often define and showcase our entire existence. Every product that we use is made of shapes and forms that are built with lines. Straight, curved, dashed, spiraled; horizontal, diagonally, lines shape the way we act, adapt and live.
This collection of hand painted leather bib necklaces are inspired by the Chinese word for Lines – Xian. The color combinations, line patterns and motifs are oriental lending richness to these one of a kind pieces.”
Here are the first three pieces – all based on the color RED:
