Jan ABS challenge – As the wheels move

as the wheels move by Sayuri

After a long time I am participating in the ABS monthly challenge – for January. Our Inspiration is a poster titled “Imagine tomorrows World” by Hundertwasser which was originally created to mark the 50th anniversary of the IUCN, The World Conservation Union in November 1998.

My Design:  As the wheels move

The poster somehow reminded me of labs and complicated machines in cartoons (Think Dexter’s laboratory or the scary scene in Smurfs were Gargamel tries to extract smurf essence) that would conjure up some unique/powerful object when switched on and so I decided to go with a Lab – machine theme.

Jan ABS challenge lampwork bead necklace

I picked these cog wheels beads in blue, orange and red made by an independent glass artist Jyothi that I have been hoarding for nearly 2 years. I added some crystals in yellow, violet for shine (a supposedly futuristic quality). I picked a blackish brown wire for the loops as I didnt want to add too much black in the design and reduce its vibrancy and the green jade to balance all that darkness.
Handmade wire links support a off white fabric ribbon embroidered with little purple rounds as in the picture.
The Form of the necklace is very geometric (Y silhouette) with the tassle at the end to soften up the whole look and make it look as though a magical blue potion is coming through the machine as the cog wheels move.

Inspiration Poster

So what do you think of of my As the wheels move neckalce? I found the form very experimental and a tad difficult as its a departure from my usual style. But I am glad that I got around it without trying to replicate the people/faces in the poster which is a big “NO” as far as creativity standards on unconventionality are concerned.

I hope you find it interesting
Cheers

Great interpretation! I love the machine/Lab theme and your combination of hard and soft material.

It is always exciting to read about an art person's journey and how you derived the science concept out of this futuristic poster! Frankly, it didn't cross my mind but I really like your conceptual design 🙂

I guess it sometimes pays to be a science student. I never really saw the background properly, only the lab style set up really jumped at me. It also reminded me a little of the movie Smurfs – it looked like the castle gargamel was trying to extract the smurf essence 😀

Thank you so much. This is such a departure from my usual style and I had many doubts. It is nice to hear such positive feedback
