Jhumka or Jhimki is the semi modern version of the ancient Indian Karnaphool or karnika. Karna or Kaan means ear and phool means flower – thus karnaphool means ear flower or the flower shaped component that is used to adorn the earlobe. In early times it was based on the shape of lotus seed-pod fixed upside down like a tassel. Sometimes the pods were accentuated withΒ seeds beads or pearls to accentuate the dangling effect. If interested you can look at the full list of Ancient Indian Jewelry Oxidized Silver Jhumkas are always in trend in India and so here are the two Jhumka designs in Sterling silver from Sudya – my Precious and semi precious jewelry collection.
Indian women love jhumkas and you can see them in every avatar in India – Paper, Fabric jhumkas, plastic, clay, metal they are abundant in different sizes in shapes as everyone wants to own atleast one pair. It was for this reason I added them to the collection as a fail safe option, just before the launch. My hunch proved to be right as these were sold out immediately.
The Silver Jhumkas have been created by mastercraftsmen from Orissa who specialise in filigree. To the first one I have added pink agate beads and pearls for contrast. In the second one I have used crystal stones and settings with berry colored beads to offer more of a tonal gradation. It might not be completely silver -I am all for mixing metals and textures and my client quite liked the end result. Infact she told me that her daughter has reserved it as one of her “Its for me when I grow up” Pieces.
PS: the Sudya collection made me work really hard on my photography skills and I think I have improved a little bit. Am quite proud of the self made wood grain background. More on it later with a DIY.
So which one do you like?
I hope you find it interesting
Cheers
