Green Coloured Gemstones – part 2

When we go looking to buy green stone jewelry at store we invariably end up asking for emeralds or jades partially because those are the only green stones that we know of . But there are many beautiful stones available in this color of nature and this segment “Gemstones in color” is a small attempt to bring them to your attention. Today I’ll continue with second set of Green Coloured Gemstones. (Click here for part 1 of gemstones in green)

7. Garnet

Most people assume that garnets are only red or purple, but green garnets are really beautifula) Tsavorite garnet – Tsavorite is a green, grossular garnet first discovered in the mountains of northeast Tanzania, and later in Kenya. Its beautiful in its natural form without requiring any treatmentb) Merelani Mint garnets – named after their mining locality, the Merelani Hills of Tanzania. Like Tsavorites, they are also categorized as grossular garnets. Even though Merelani Mint Green Garnet is just a light green cousin of Tsavorite  its more expensive. Its pastel green color is becoming more and more popular among collectors and jewelry designers.c) Demontoid – a type of Andradite (garnet that contains manganese and titanium) that is yellow green in color

8. Aventurine

Aventurine gems with fuschite are a medium to dark green with a silvery green or blue sheen and with hematite they are typically red-brown or gold-brown and are often called as gold stones. It has the power to soothe the troubled spirit and bring inner peace. Widely used to reduce stress, develop confidence, imagination and improve prosperity. Aventurine is the birthsone for January.

9. Chalcedony

Calcedon or Chalcedony is a compact form of silica, composed of microscopic quartz crystals. It could be uniformly colored, or have curved bands of varying color like agate. In the past it has been used to make pointed tools, sculptures and even containers.

10.Apatite

Apatite looks a lot like tourmaline but they are made up of calcium phosphate.The light green version of this stone is sometimes nicknamed as the ‘asparagus stone’.

11.Bloodstone

Also known as Heliotrope, Bloodstone, is an opaque dark-green form of chalcedony quartz with distinctive red spots which resemble blood.It is used to create carved cabochons and also plays a role in country medicine. Legend has it that when Jesus Christ was crucified, his blood spilled on to the jasper at his feet creating the bloodstone and hence it is used as a symbol of martyrdom. But heliotrope is not known to contain any jasper at all.

12.Tourmaline

Fondly refered to as the ‘Thura mali’ or mixed stone pink and green tourmalines are very popular. Verdelite or fully green tourmaline is supposed to have a lot of healing power and particularly energies ones heart. It is also said to be the yang to the ying that is pink tourmaline. green tourmaline is also said to peak ones creativity leading to exploration of ones hobby into a profession. They are also used in electrical circuits as a high frequencies can be passed through without them shattering

13.Indicolite

Indicolite is the  sodium-rich variety of tourmaline and is sometimes called blue tourmaline.It is a beautiful dark peacock green stone. It has Loss of transparency in one direction due to strong pleochroism (change of color when viewed from different angles in presence of light).

14. Malachite

Malachite or the mallow green stone results from weathering of copper ores and is often found together with azurite, goethite, and calcite.It was used in the paint insdustry to obtain green pigments till the 1800’s. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans have used it in both jewlery as well as makeup. Called the “mirror of the soul”, it brings to notice, the inner feelings of the person who is wearing it regardless of the feelings being positive or negative.

15. Kornerupine

Kornerupine is a rare magnesium aluminum borate silicate which shows different colors (green blue, brown) depending on the angle it is viewed. As I was writing this post, my mom pointed out to her dark green saree and asked if any gemstones were available in that color. I later found two gemstones – Indicolite and konerupine (which I haven’t heard of till date) that are dark green in color and an exact match.

Mom!! all your sarees have matching gemstones – too bad we cant afford them all 😀 lol

    it is so great to have this kind of information as i keep looking for an info about the stone according to their group of colours in order not to false identify the stone…it just one more thing that i always wonder on how can we differentiate the stone type by looking to its colour, like how to identify that the stone is emerald not tourmaline so on and so fort…for people like me its very hard to tell that…

    Looks like you skipped over numbers 8 and 13. Any reason? Would like to know if you had two more green gemstones.

    A lot of training and practice is required to differentiate stones as there are synthetic (stimulated) stones in all categories. We can at least know the correct names so as to not get fooled
