Now for today’s Feature…We are going to meet Mrs. Usha Srikumar, a crafter extraordinaire from Chennai and we can find her in the blog world at ushasrikumar . I love the way in which she talks about her tanjore paintings on the blog. Usually people who craft give more details about what they did and less about the craft, but I always believe in putting the craft before the crafter. In each post she describes the subject of her painting (in this case Gods and Goddesses) their multiple names, myths in a way that we feel attached to her works. So without much ado, lets meet her.
Hi Usha , Tell us something about you – your family, work
Hi, I am Usha Srikumar….a graduate in English Literature-Born and brought up in the beautiful Textile town of Coimbatore….Husband’s work has brought me to this hot and busy Namma Chennai….Chennai saw me blossoming from a hobby enthusiast and a full time mother to someone who not only dabbles with art and craft but also teaches them and sells them….I am run a home based personalised hobby classes which I am running for more than 15 years where I have taught more than 500 students from different parts of the world …

That’s incredible! What all do you teach?
I teach Tanjore Paintings, Kerala Murals, Stained glass paintings, Madhubanis, 3D murals and nearly some 15 other arts and crafts ….

I think that pretty much sums up the things that you like to create too. Do you sell them? What motivates you?

Selling my hand crafted products is another pleasurable and profitable outcome of my passion… Selling is a great motivator…it motivates me to create more and ups my standards too…And the icing on the cake is …You get paid to do something that you absolutely  enjoy!!!

That’s a wonderful philosophy, earning money while you do something that you absolutely love. I am with you totally on that one. What are your other interests?
Writing and cooking are my other interests and I have contributed many articles, short stories and cookery features in many a Tamil magazine…My Craft column was published by the leading Tamil woman’s magazine MANGAYAR MALAR for 26 months …

You are then a role model to a lot of  people. Who is you Role model?
My role models are plenty…Some have inspired me, some motivated me and some threw challenges at me…But my chief inspiration and motivation is my Mother…..

As a designer I have made loads of mistakes, I still do and attempt learning from them. What about you?

My mistakes are a few mainly caused my over enthusiasm ….many a times have I ended up with unexpected color combinations, distorted shapes and so on…they are all part of the game and sometimes the accident results in a more innovative byproduct  too!!! Happy Accidents :-))) as I call them !

Haaa…very true. I have done crazy things that actually turned out better than the origianl idea. Has there been a point in your life when you thought (thinking) that yes, I have succeeded in doing what I want to do?
When I made my first sale… When my students thank me with a beaming smile…when I get a pat on my back from an unexpected quarter…I smile with a sense of satisfation and than God for giving me this small success in what I indulge passionately…and what I find a relaxing therapy!
So What’s next?
Make my blog a full blown Arts and crafts portal with a great reach…(I know it will take time…let me see)

Good luck with that and I hope very soon your work would have a great web presence too. Thanks a lot for joining us today and it was a pleasure meeting you..
Don’t you think so guys, So come on lets go check out her blog…!!

 Cheers
