We’re All Ears: Anamorphic art Inspiration

Anamorphic art
After missing out on the challenge these past couple of months, I am here once again with my entry for the We’re All Ears challenge. So what was the December Inspiration? This month Erin has challenged us to create earrings based on Anamorphic art or specifically the Breaking Wave Anamorphic art kinetic sculpture created  for Biogen-Idec’s  headquarters in Cambridge, MA. Check out the inspiration page to know more about the installation and do watch this stunning video

 Realisation
Compared with the marvel the breaking wave is, I am sure any earring created by me will appear pale. Nevertheless I decided to create something based on it. This video gave me two ideas.
– one was to create something based on the Fibonacci series and Phi (I have been a great fan of the Golden proportion ever since I learnt about it in the first year of my college) but I didnt want to do an obvious nautilus or a graduating spiral, or a layered jhumkha based on the Achimedes spiral ( I did make a ring though)
– The second was to create something that was simple yet kinetic; something cool that I could wear. As you guessed it, the lazy and very tired bum in me picked out the second option.
This also coincided with a refashion project that I started – I had made a MOP button bracelet in 2010 and most of the jumprings on it had either rusted or become colorless so I decided to use the buttons (regular readers of this blog would recognise my craze for button jewelry) and add in stones from yet another unwearable bracelet and make earrings

My Concept
I wanted an Anamorphic art with kinetic action or something with movement but I do not prefer two metal parts that intersect or move as it creates a sound. So I chose the game of Stone Skipping where you throw a stone in such a way that it just skips or bounces  off the surface of the water before sinking. Its a common rural past time where people see how many times the stone can bounce before it sinks or who can thrown the farthest. I have made a long ear hook to indicate ‘how far we throw the stone’, the buttons indicate the normal ripples caused by the bounce of the stone and the final stone indicates the huge plonk where the stone sinks inside. As ‘Stone Skipping’ didnt sound like a good name, I have named my design as the Ripple effect mainly inspired by the normal ripples caused by the stones and how the shine factor increases from the earhook through the mop buttons to the stone dangle.I hope that makes sense to you

The result is a pair of Neck grazer earrings. I like these earrings as they are simple and classic with a white and gold color combination. Also its elegant and can be worn as cocktail earrings with a gown and still add some fun to the ensemble with the cute buttons making them perfect for holiday parties. Because I have to work everyday this month, I am going to wear a nice dress and these earrings to work and enjoy them. Who says that you cant look good when you work?

I love these! Great design and I love your inspiration of skipping rocks.

  3. Katherine Thompson avatar

I absolutely see the motion of stone skipping. I love the play fullness of the buttons and how you used them in the expression of motion.

Where to begin? First let me say that I found your narrative of your creative process fascinating. So many deep thought processes involved. I love the Fibonacci aspect, but the stone skipping concept was most thought-provoking. The long throw of the earwires, the ripples of the button, and the plonk of the stone. You considered everything. Last, your use of MOP buttons, one of my favorite components. I'm so glad these found new life in your lovely earrings. I will have to check out your button jewelry.

Oh these are great, everything I love – buttons, shiny dangles and a vintage vibe! You also made me laugh, I've lived by the sea all my life and never once have I managed to get a pebble to bounce across the water!! xx

I love what you did. Great minds think alike. I actually gave some thought to using some buttons for my earrings also.

Well done, Divya! I had absolutely no idea how to handle this otherwise inspirational art!

  8. Divya N avatar

Thanks, I guess it always works when you link things that you are familiar with (or closer to home) with any given inspiration and sort of derive from it. That will make the realisation more indirect and thereby more interesting

  9. Divya N avatar

Oh I love buttons and find a way to use them always. They are great for adding quirkiness and fun to any design

  10. Divya N avatar

Haaa, I have tried it too many times and failed. People usually say that it depends on your arm movement

Firstly thanks for reading. I have this habit of writing too much and was wondering if it will be interesting at all to anyone. I am glad that you found the process and the product interesting

I love sewing related jewellery – these are perfect!

Great fun, Miss Divya! I love the act of stone skipping. You took the concept of the vertical movement and turned it horizontal. Love it! Thank you for sharing your mini kinetic sculptures for the December We're All Ears Challenge. Check back on January 2nd for the next inspiration! Enjoy the day! Erin

Thanks Erin for such a fabulous inspiration, I had great fun making these earrings

That's a clever design idea to convey the look of flat stones skipping across water, I like it!

Oh I LOVE nerd jewelry! Go you!

I like the pearl, the shimmer and dangle of your design.
