As a Jewelry designer, I am often asked, if I have a catalogue of my products. Unfortunately I don’t keep a physical one around as I make one off pieces that I don’t repeat. But for people who make more pieces per design, it makes a lot of sense to have a jewelry book.
As social media savvy folks we might not appreciate the value of a physical book when we have Facebook or instagram where we can showcase photos with comments and updates, but there is something about a real book that makes you feel, want and long for its contents.
Jewelry book
Imagine flipping through a jewelry book of your own – Your Brand logo on the cover, followed by your philosophy or mission statement, with your photo. It could be followed by your inspirations, words of wisdom that would lead up to an enticing catalogue of your seasonal collection or core and regular products with beautiful photographs, description and even price points all printed in a professional way on quality paper bound just the way you want. Wouldn’t that be great?
How to make a jewelry book
So If you would like to make a jewelry Book, here are the things that you should keep in mind
1. It’s all about the pictures: Ofcourse, its a photo book making the photographs the hero of the book. Select deep rich pictures that are composed well on a clear background. Consider using light backgrounds for a darker colors and vice versa. Gray backgrounds work with most colors, textures and shapes and black backgrounds make your pieces look luxurious. So select depending on the feel of your book
2. Make a list. This is a critical step, and even if its a catalogue. Do you want only one picture of a piece, multiples, or do you want a collage? Is it going to be a seasonal or core catalogue? If its a portfolio, you would want to showcase pieces that show off your strengths – variety, skill level and Creativity
3. Text – Often the right amount of text can elevate your jewelry book to another level. Plan what you want to say and keep it short – A simple bio maybe, your design philosophy and a short write up about the collection would lend authenticity to your book. Pick readable fonts that would gel with the pictures rather than standing apart.
4. Dress it up. Make your book as fashionable as the pieces featured in it. Choose a simple design that doesn’t upstage the design , but still looks chic. Pick a size and paper type that showcases the work brilliantly.
5. Sell it: If you think you can make a brilliant how to book or a book that you think people will buy, you can sell it too
