When I returned from my annual sourcing trip to Delhi, I received a box from Plessmann. Endless leather, a leading supplier of high quality leather cords based in Germany near the gold city” of Pforzheim. It contained an array of of beautiful leather cords and it really made me try out some new designs. As I was playing around with cords trying to make a graduated cords necklace or a spiral bib necklace, my mom suggested that I try loosely knotting it to make a Turban – birds nest kind of base. I was intrigued and decide to make and add the design to my Rhapsody collection. The turban bind gives this necklace its name, thereby making it the Turban gemstone leather necklace.
Turban gemstone leather necklace
Materials required
– Square peach stone with bezel
– 26g brass wire
– cord ends (fold overs) -2
– 2 jump rings and lobster claw
– glue (fevi bond)
– pliers
Process:
Its a fairly simple process and takes around 5 minutes to make (excl drying time).
1) & 2) hold one cord in the center, around you two middle fingers, like a loop and start winding the rest of the cord around it.
3) & 4) tuck the edges in , winding it slightly around the coil so that it resembles a loosely turks knot o coil and glue ends in place. It should look like a turban or a birds nest.
5) cut around 8 inches of wire, thread it through the stone (it had 2 holes at the top). Wind the wire over the nest where the edges meet a couple of times. Do no cut the wire
6) Pick up the second cord, fold in half to find the center and place the nest underneath it.Use the extra wire to connect the pendant to the cord and wind. Tuck in the edges
7) Dab a little glue to the ends of the cords, put them in the cord ends and foldover. Let dry for atleast a couple of hours, before putting in the rings and clasp.
Wear and enjoy the Turban gemstone leather necklace!!
# Tip: Squash the ends of cord flat before you put in the cord end. That way it stays put and doesn’t move.
Also Instead of one big gem, you can use, multiple beads or pearls to stimulate the birds nest effect. You could also use more wire and wrap (coil) around the entire top portion of the turban, if you want it to be more metallic and denser
I hope you found it interesting
Cheers
