Key to Chennai Necklace – DIY

Imagine, having a key that will open the doors of the city of your Choice, wouldnt that be cool??
And what if we could make one ourselves, super cool right? That was exactly what I had in mind when I set out to write the March 2nd D-I-Y column of Chennai Chronicle, a supplement of  the Deccan Chronicle paper Chennai edition). The objective was to write a very simple tutorial that was text based and relevant to Chennai. So I proposed to make a Map-key necklace with the map of chennai on it and thus was born  the “Key to Chennai Necklace” featured in the DIY section of Chennai Chronicle on March second, along with my photo and a normal interview. Read further for a quick tutorial (The image has the detailed tute version).

To make the key to the city of your choice, You require simple Materials like a flat key with a hole on top, a map, modpodge, permanent marker, basic stationary  and a jump ring and a chain

The procedure is very simple –

Just Trace the outline of the key on the map and cut out 2 pieces to cover either sides of the key. Leave the top hole of the key open. Using the permanent marker or even nail polish color the edges of the key completely covering all the nooks. Modpodge the cut out map pieces to either side of the key. Then cover the key entirely with atleast 2 coats pausing to let it dry between coats. If you want a glossy look, give a coat of clear polish. After it dries, add in a ring and string it onto a chain or a leather/silk cord to wear it as a necklace
Your very own Key to Chennai necklace is now ready. You could customize it by using maps of different locations, or painting the sides in different colors or adding beads or other charms to the pendant. The pendant could even be converted into a keychain by adding a key ring instead of a chain.

Hope you find it interesting
Cheers
