Accessory Project Workshop

Last month, one of the Colleges where I teach, National college of Design, approached me to conduct a week long fashion workshop for its students (of fashion design). After a lot of brainstorming, I proposed that we do an Accessory based workshop using “Fabric” as the focus or main material. Thus was born the “Accessory Project” a five day fun filled workshop  with lectures, seminars, demos and practical work culminating in an exhibit display. Here are some pictures of the wonderful creations of the students who made accessories and jewelry for the first time in their lives.

The students were divided into 8 groups and were each given a color or color family to work with. They came up with shoes, bags, jewelry, watch straps, belts and other crazy stuff using the color boards that they made as an inspiration.

My Objective was to impart an understanding of the role played by accessories in fashion and to Explore different fabric manipulation techniques to come up with innovative products using out of the box thinking. Creating Awareness and promoting the importance of hand crafting and creative handmade products from locally available materials among the Gen Next was another objective, which I am proud to say that we achieved.

Before the workshop started, almost everyone including myself were skeptical on how it will happen. The very thought that I had to single handedly stream a group of 40-50 students towards a particular goal was a little unnerving. But after the second day, when I completed my presentations on Accessorization- Fashion accessory – a conceptual reality and Fashion accessories & Jewelry in Fabric I got the confidence. The  next 2 days were a whirlwind with the students rising up to my every demand with regard to the project.
On the final day with 3 hours to go for the display, When the college Director found that not even one team had finished their work, he asked me, regarding postponing the display, I told him to just wait and watch and I was really happy when true to my words they put it up just when the time was up. Their displays were very very creative so to do justice to that, I will follow up with photos in my following post….
Till then
Cheers
