Now for today’s Feature… we are meeting someone who is not just another engineer turned crafter, but someone who has a great eye for detail. Shes also an Ippity Chick, deals in beautiful craft supplies from various brands and has won umpteen online challenges..I recently had an opportunity to collaborate with her on a project and it was awesome…She is Ujjwal from Handmade with Love
Hi Ujjwal, Tell us something about you, yours likes and your interests
I am a software engineer turned stay-at-home-mum-to-be who is an enthusiastic crafter and someone who’s in love with all pretty things especially if its related to paper 🙂

What is that you like to create and tell us something about your style?
I have been crafting and making cards since I was in school but I hadn’t come across all the fancy tools of the trade then. It was 2 years back that I started taking my hobby a little more seriously. I came across blogging and it was a whole new world for me. I was so inspired by all the talented crafters out there both in India and abroad that it was a little overwhelming in the beginning. I found products, techniques and ideas I couldn’t have imagined existed. As I experimented with my style, I found myself drawn towards Clean & Simple ones and that is something that stuck to me.

You make such beautiful cards, how do you sell them? And is it profitable to sell cards?

I would say that I have been lucky in being a seller by word of mouth publicity. I have catered to a lot of different custom orders that were not just limited to cards and I still get a lot of requests through online community. Other than a FB page, I basically did nothing much to promote this business (although I should 🙂 ). As for the profits, I will only say that the effort is a lot of more than a customer would ever understand. Its difficult to put a price on your ideas and work effort. There have been so many instances when I felt I charged less for a particular order because of the tremendous amount of effort I had to put in. I guess its about being able to calculate the effort well in advance before quoting a price and that will come only with experience and I am still learning 🙂
I was astounded by the amount of work you put into creating gift bags for a child’s birthday. It was fabulous!! Your client must have been delighted
Thanks. sometimes the appreciation from client makes up for monetary loss. Its gratifying to see people going gaga over your creations 🙂
As a designer I have made mistakes, I still do and attempt learning from them. What about you?
When I started, I didn’t even know how to use a simple clear stamp so you can imagine the mistakes I have made along the way aren’t few. But I never gave up. I watched tutorials, read articles and kept on learning. And today when I receive an email from somebody I have never met saying that I inspired them to get creative and start blogging, I feel so happy to have reached that point. I guess mistakes are a part of who we are and what we become.
Are there any blogs, books or sites that you would recommend as a great crafting resources

Although there are books, magazines and lot of different sites to find inspiration, I think YouTube is an excellent resource for learning different craft techniques. Another site I could be found over these days is Pinterest – amazing place to get inspired.

So What’s next?

I would really love to continue blogging and venture into teaching the crafty stuff to enthusiasts (as I get a lot of requests for that). I also plan to put up a website for all the handmade things I make and sell to get more exposure for paper crafts. Another thing that I have wanted to do for a long time is to participate in an exhibition. Something that I look forward to doing in near future 🙂
Exhibitions are an experience by themselves and I hope you get to participate in one soon. Thanks Ujjwal for joining us today and we wish you great luck in your business. Lets go check out her blog now…

Cheers
